Victor Hugo enjoyed an extraordinarily successful literary career that spanned over sixty years and covered many different genres and forms. His poetry was consistently admired in France and he was widely considered as one of the greatest lyrical poets of his time. In addition to his poetry he wrote numerous novels including The Hunchback of Notre-Dame (1831) and Les Misérables (1862).
